The very notion of objective truth was viewed as suspect by Mansfield. What Mansfield had in common with other modernist writers, including those who were male, is a questioning of the nature of truth and reality a challenging of the certainties and assumptions that had underpinned Victorian fiction. But the growth of feminist literary criticism in the 1970s, particularly the work of Hélène Cixous and others in France, has led to a reappraisal of Mansfield’s work, and in particular her short stories. Katherine Mansfield was, until recently, regarded as very much a minor figure in the development of modernism. Sally Ledger, The New Woman: Fiction and Feminism at the Fin de Siècle (Manchester & New York, Manchester University Press, 1997) Yeats – these are the names which have dominated the English modernist literary canon, with Virginia Woolf representing a token female presence. Until relatively recently, women have been noticeable only by their absence from the tradition of Anglo-American high modernism.

How to Be a Canadian by Will Ferguson5/19/2023 One reviewer had it right: ‘Like Bryson, Ferguson is often as his best (and laugh-out-loud funniest) when most annoyed.’, such as when he realizes he’s the creepy old man in the youth hostel or when he gets trapped in a church during pilgrim ceremonies. (There’s a passage in Hitching Rides with Buddha that actually makes me tear up but that never happened in this book). There were plenty of sentences that made me grin while I was reading and there were plenty of sentences that made me feel rather sad and melancholic. The aspect of Ferguson’s books I love most is the way he can blend humour and serious reflection (that’s the best way I can think of to describe it…). Beyond Belfast, the story of his ambitious undertaking to walk the Ulster Way (a 560 mile path around Northern Ireland) will be released in soft-cover just before my birthday and I will definitely be putting it on my wishlist. Still have to read Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw and I’m sure I’ll get around to his fiction one day.Anyhow. The only other book I’ve read by him, aside from this one, is How to Be Canadian. My favourite book by Ferguson is Hitching Rides With Buddha. I’ve enjoyed him since we first studied Why I Hate Canadians in grade 11 history. Tolkien5/19/2023 He illustrated many scenes from The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, sometimes drawing or painting as he was writing in order to visualize the imagined scene more clearly. He excelled at landscapes and often drew inspiration from his own stories. Tolkien was an accomplished amateur artist who painted for pleasure and relaxation. Through this secondary world Tolkien writes perceptively of universal human concerns – love and loss, courage and betrayal, humility and pride – giving his books a wide and enduring appeal. Tolkien’s most popular works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set in Middle-earth, an imagined world with strangely familiar settings inhabited by ancient and extraordinary peoples. His creativity, confined to his spare time, found its outlet in fantasy works, stories for children, poetry, illustration and invented languages and alphabets. Known to millions around the world as the author of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien spent most of his life teaching at the University of Oxford where he was a distinguished academic in the fields of Old and Middle English and Old Norse. Yet, domestic strife may lead to regional and international upheaval and invite foreign political and military intervention. Although military considerations remain at the core of states’ security policies, it has been recognised that threats of non-military nature coming from the internal environment of the state could have a significant impact on the security of the state. It has also become a common belief that the majority of contemporary wars are less a problem of the relations between states than a problem within states (Melander 1999). It has been argued (Holsti 1996 & 1991) that war in the post-Cold War era has different sources and takes on significantly different characteristics than previous wars.
